Question:
Does anyone use an auto-shift transmission in their trucks? If so, how does it work for you? Do you like it or not? Would an auto-shift transmission work well? My current transmission doesn’t float gears well, and it is somewhat fatiguing double-clutching all the time.
Answers:
We don’t use auto-shift transmissions, but have 9- or 10-speed transmissions in our 400-hp Cat- and Cummins-powered rigs. All these trucks shift without using the clutch. The only time the clutch is used is when taking off. No double-clutching.

I have a Ford with an Allison automatic transmission. It works well. No more clutch repairs.

Employees are a public menace when it comes to transmissions. I believe that unless you are in a mountain area, an automatic transmission is the way to go.

I have had three vacuum trucks with automatic transmissions. I would have nothing but. It’s easier to drive and easier to hook up to a power takeoff. You can place a toggle switch in any number of places on the truck.

We made the move to automatic transmissions in our fleet early this year. We added two 335 Peterbilts with Allison automatics. We have found that it opens up the driver pool for new hires. These new auto transmissions are almost idiot-proof. I would recommend putting Jake brakes on them to save on brake wear.

I have eight pump trucks with automatics. It’s the only way to go. Add a hydraulic pump and equipment drive and it is great. Try one and you will never want anything else. I have even ordered autos in my last nine dump trucks.
What’s your cancellation policy?
Question:
We don’t seem to have a problem with special event or restroom trailer cancellations yet, but I figure it’s a matter of time before we get burned. I have no particular policy in place at the moment. Any feedback on your cancellation policies would be appreciated — in particular, when there is a deposit, what time period can you get your deposit back? When do you lose it all together?
Answer:
If you have a great demand for your equipment, the refund policy might be a matter of a week’s notice. If the equipment takes a long time to book out, then your cancellation policy needs to reflect that. A lot of times, our special equipment is in such demand that if we get a cancellation, we can book it again in a day or two. Or we have a customer who took a lesser unit, but would be happy to have the nicer product.
