Every year since 1963, the president of the United States has issued a proclamation announcing National Small Business Week, designated to recognize the important contributions of entrepreneurs and small-business owners.

This year’s slogan is “Dream Big, Start Small.” This is the perfect motto, acknowledging the still-alive American Dream, along with the hard work and determination it takes to establish a new business ­– and make it a success.

A handful of major cities will host Small Business Association events this week. While you may not be able to attend any of those events it’s still important to take time to recognize the meaning behind this week and celebrate it any way you can.

You should be proud if you own, operate or are employed by a small business, and here’s why:

More than half of Americans either own or work for a small business.

According to the SBA, small businesses create about two out of every three new jobs in the U.S. each year. Whether you employ a few family members or 50 people, you are contributing to society in a significant way by giving those employees a way to provide for themselves and their families.

You provide for yourself and your own family as well. If you’re lucky enough to pass a business on to your children, maybe your company will become one of the multigenerational businesses that we proudly feature in PRO magazine.

No matter the size of your business, whether you keep it small or continually strive to grow, you have the ability to go home at the end of the day knowing that you made a difference in the lives of your employees and your customers.

Small businesses make a positive impact on their communities, too. Besides providing jobs, you supply a valuable service to your customers, from music festivals to weddings to construction sites. Sanitation is such a vital part of our lives, yet it’s taken for granted by most.

You may not be one to toot your own horn, but this week you deserve to. Create a conversation with your friends, family and customers. This is your chance to share what your company means to you and to the community.
