When an employee needs to take a few days off, it might be because they have to attend to family issues or a personal matter. Or it might be because they have to go to Nashville, Tennessee, to record another album in the Oak Ridge Boys’ studio. Jim Smith is the sales and marketing manager for A King’s Throne, a portable restroom company in Des Moines, Iowa, but in his spare time he sings.

“When I’m not working here, I’m a gospel singer,” he says. “I’ve been in the music ministry for about 28 years. I’ve always loved singing. I had a chance to join a quartet for almost 30 years, and I’ve been a soloist now for about three years. I’ve been lucky enough to have the Oak Ridge Boys’ producer produce all my records. Their band plays all of my tracks.”

Smith travels around Iowa and other states performing at churches and community events. Posted on the company’s Facebook page is a video of him singing the national anthem at a Drake University Bulldogs basketball game against the University of Northern Iowa. He has also performed for the Iowa Cubs minor league baseball team, the Iowa Energy basketball team and the Iowa Wild ice hockey team.

He says he couldn’t have his second career without the support of company owners Tim and Wanda Smith. “They’re great,” he says. “If I need to roll out early on a Friday afternoon because I’m singing in Illinois or Wisconsin or Kansas or somewhere, they have no problem supporting it.” And for his part, Jim Smith doesn’t let his extracurricular activities interfere with his work. He’s never out of touch, and he handles any issues that come up. “I have my work phone, so if somebody calls in, they can forward the call to me and I can still take care of things while pursuing my weekend thing.” Read more about A King’s Throne in this month’s issue of Portable Restroom Operator magazine.
