If you want a glimpse into growing efforts to build portable sanitation infrastructure in Africa, take a look at this link to a recent CNN News story about Nigerian company DMT (Dignified Mobile Toilets): http://portal.tds.net/video/play/416989/channels/cnn/world
To learn more about the efforts of DMT’s founder, Otunba Gadaffi, take a look at the company’s website, www.dmttoilet.com. You’ll notice the company’s unfortunate choice for a marketing slogan at the top of the website, but if you dig deeper, you’ll learn about continuing efforts to bring about sanitation improvements in public places.
According to a BBC News interview with Gadaffi, there were only 500 functioning public restrooms in Nigeria when he started the company in 1992. Among other initiatives undertaken by the company is the Decent Toilets For Schools program, which builds better latrines at public schools, and a project to turn sewage typically dumped into rivers and lagoons into biogas and organic fertilizer.
