A teeth-chattering blast of cold and a forecast for 3-5 inches of snow this Thanksgiving in Wisconsin have me thinking about winter preparations for PROs who live and work in northern climes. Here are a few reminders to get your service rigs ready to roll through the worst conditions you’ll face all year:

Tire considerations.

How’s the tread depth on the tires for each of your service vehicles? If any are reaching the end of their useful life, consider changing them out before a driver gets stuck in a snow bank. Do you run chains when the going gets rough? If so, inspect your chains and make sure they’re onboard when you need them. Check your tire inflation now. Tire pressure is often reduced in cold weather, which can impact handing, tire life and fuel efficiency.

Coolant strength in vehicles.

Check the effectiveness of your anti-freeze in every vehicle. If you added water at any time last summer, coolant capabilities could be compromised. If you’ve been running with the same coolant for several years, consider having a flush and fill for further engine protection.

Battery check.

Just because the battery hasn’t let you down in the past, don’t ignore scheduled battery replacement. If your battery is nearing the end of its useful life, these first cold weeks of winter are when you’re going to find out. If you have any doubts about making it through the winter, change batteries now before you’re stranded somewhere along a route.

Stock emergency gear.

In the event you are stranded in a snowstorm or the truck breaks down this winter, be prepared with an emergency kit. Stow a blanket, some granola bars or other energy foods and extra water behind the seat in your service vehicle. Toss a shovel and some sand or road salt on the rig in case you get stuck. Make sure your cell phone battery holds a good charge.
