In this interesting story in the Portland Press Herald in Portland, Maine, reporter Ray Routhier recounts a day spent with a park ranger at Fort Williams Park. The writer was surprised to find that one of the duties of ranger Coleman Rogers is keeping the portable restrooms clean.

Routhier carried a broom and a bucket of toilet paper rolls along on the rounds to check on 18 restrooms placed throughout the park. He and the ranger restocked paper and swept debris from the units. He said further cleaning and pumping the holding tanks are left up to the professional PROs.

The story got me to thinking … Do you have customers—maybe municipalities—that do some of the maintenance on the units you place for them? To what extent do they spruce up the units between services? Do you discourage this and promote extra services if the units get dirty quickly? Are customers asking to pitch in themselves more often in a challenging economy?
