According to several news accounts, a few dozen portable restrooms were destroyed last week in a blaze in an industrial lot where they were stored. Smoke was visible for miles around when the early afternoon fire was reported, according to a story in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
The cause of the fire hasn’t been determined yet. The newspaper story reported that homeless people in the area had been getting onto the property through a hole in a chain link fence, but fire officials said even a piece of a beer bottle hitting the sun just right could have started the blaze.
Numerous arsons involving portable restrooms have been reported in the past few years, but often they have been single or a few units set on fire at a construction site where they were placed. This incident raises a few questions: Is the yard where you store your inventory well protected with a fence or other security measures? And is the property kept clean of dried sticks, garbage or other debris that could ignite a fire and threaten your livelihood?
A fire destroyed a good number of your restrooms could be financially devastating, especially at the height of the busy summer season. Think about what you do to prevent such a disaster.
