Besides optimizing routing and service efficiency, the system promotes safe driving, which relates directly to productivity and profit. “Samsara gives each driver a safety score, and the whole company a safety score, as well,” Damian Baker says. “If you have a safety threshold you’re trying to meet with your team, you can see who is helping that and who might be falling short.”
The Samsara solution includes a GPS map with some 4 trillion data points and covering 99% of major U.S. roads. It extends real-time tracking for full control across vehicles, trailers and equipment. It enables company staff to monitor vehicle locations, routes and fuel usage. It also helps deter theft and, where necessary, streamline recovery of valuable assets.
A live-sharing feature helps keep customers informed with real-time estimated times of arrival and vehicle locations from a shared internet address, which can be sent directly to a mobile device. Customers can see the exact location of the truck with their delivery at any time. This helps drivers deliver a seamless experience and eliminates time spent fielding questions like “When is my delivery going to arrive?”
The tracking system’s Vehicle Telematics offering goes beyond GPS, according to the company. The solution includes geofencing, which establishes boundaries and sends alerts or recommends actions when vehicles enter or exit a defined area. It also automates location tracking and reporting to help fleet managers improve productivity and security.
Data from the system also facilitates sound vehicle maintenance. The system records all vehicle mileage so that maintenance tasks can be scheduled according to manufacturer recommendations or the fleet’s standards.
