It’s time to gather at the Water & Wastewater Equipment, Treatment & Transport Show in Indianapolis. You may be reading this early in the month in anticipation of the biggest trade show in wastewater, or you’re checking out PRO while walking the halls of the Indiana Convention Center. Either way, I want to make a few pitches to you, the leaders of the portable sanitation industry.
If it’s the former, I’d like to take a moment to encourage you to travel to Indy for the WWETT Show, which runs from Wednesday, Feb. 22, to Saturday, Feb. 25. If you’ve never attended, you’ve missed one of the best opportunities you have to learn and grow as a restroom contractor. If you’ve attended in the past, you know the great value this show provides. From the Wednesday Education Day seminars to the vast collection of industry-specific equipment and experts in the field on the exhibit floor, WWETT offers your company an edge on the competition. The machines and cutting-edge technology you’ll see in Indy will help you better serve customers and diversify your business to generate more revenue.
If it’s the latter, you’re already in a Hoosier state of mind and ready to soak it all in. You’ve probably circled all the seminars you want to attend in the show program and loosened the purse strings to order a new truck or a load of restrooms from your favorite vendors. Get ready to shop until you drop! Right here you can make head-to-head comparisons of restrooms, VIP trailers and workhorse vacuum trucks from all the major manufacturers serving the industry. If you’re lucky, you might buy a beautiful display rig off the show floor and drive it home.
TIME TO PARTY
And like years past, you can network at some truly awesome party events the WWETT Show is famous for. How about the Spartan Tool Kick-Off Party inside Lucas Oil Stadium starting at 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23? You’ll be able to step out on the home turf of the Indianapolis Colts and imagine kicking a game-winning field goal or throwing a touchdown pass. And you won’t want to miss the COLE Publishing Industry Appreciation Party Friday, Feb. 24, featuring a performance by country star Frankie Ballard.
I know what I’ll enjoy most at the WWETT Show. Meeting the PROs and talking to all of you about the challenges you face every day. Let’s face it, you put up with a lot of s--- and you persevere in a tough, challenging business. The WWETT Show gives me a chance to thank you for the work you do to keep world around you clean and sanitary. You help create tolerable working conditions for the carpenters, road builders and infrastructure workers across North America. You enable large crowds to gather and share in the joys of music concerts, state fairs and running races without wondering where folks will be able to find relief when they need it.
We can’t do without you, and you seldom get a pat on the back for your efforts.

What is your top issue of concern in the portable sanitation industry?
I often hear PROs talk about the need for better wastewater disposal options. And they worry about low-balling price cutters that inhabit the marketplace and drive down profits and quality of service. Then there is the need to improve the image of PROs and the service they provide. Make a mental list and share your ideas when we get together.
How are rising health insurance costs impacting your business?
With fast-rising costs and the uncertain future of health care — at least in America — PROs face tough decisions ahead. It’s getting harder and harder for small companies to offer health insurance benefits to employees and increasingly difficult for employees without company-provided insurance to afford anything. With a new administration taking over in Washington, the Affordable Care Act could be repealed and details of its replacement are not well known. What’s next?
What’s one improvement customers have been asking for in your service?
During 2016, I heard from some that upscale restroom trailers were gaining a foothold among customers demanding and willing to pay for a nicer restroom experience. We also featured a few companies placing high-capacity event urinals along with their standard restrooms. And maybe, just maybe, event planners are starting to order adequate numbers of restrooms and service visits to keep patrons happy at big-time events. Do you agree?
What equipment innovation would help your business reach the next level?
Let your imagination run wild with ideas that could allow you to land more customers and surpass expectations for your portable sanitation service. Maybe you’d like to create Wi-Fi hotspots around clusters of restrooms. Perhaps new products will improve efficiencies in service and standards of cleanliness. Will technologies emerge to alert you faster in the event of overused restrooms, help you service more restrooms quicker, and better market your products? Let’s brainstorm at the show.
