For several months, I’ve been meaning to write about a pressing issue that affects all portable restroom operators. Unfortunately, Cottonelle beat me to the punch.
I’m speaking about the great debate over how to hang a roll of toilet paper, with the sheets coming out over the top or dropping down from under the roll. About a year ago – It may have been a lunch table conversation at the Pumper & Cleaner Expo – I overheard a few PROs debating this issue, and it occurred to me that if there were a particular advantage one way or the other, a restroom service technician would figure it out.
From what I recall of the talk, one PRO was trying to convince the other that pulling from the top creates more momentum, which, over time, results in significant wasted paper and more frequent replenishing of supplies. This is important, of course, because PROs have a great financial interest in making TP last longer.
Paper maker Cottonelle recently launched an advertising campaign asking, “How do you roll? Over or under?’’ Of course, they’re not asking the question to cut down on wasted paper like our PROs – the subsidiary of paper giant Kimberly-Clark Worldwide Inc. wants to sell more paper, after all. At their Web site, www.cottonelle.com, visitors can answer the survey question and see a handful of video responses.
How do I roll? For as long as I remember, I’ve been an over-the-top person. I have no idea why. But I have to admit I’ve been going down low sometimes after hearing the PROs discuss the issue.
So I wonder, what do professional paper hangers have to say about this debate? How do you roll? Drop me your answer at editor@promonthly.com.
