In the upcoming June issue of PRO, I caught up with restroom contractors who live in the path of numerous deadly twisters that recently struck across Alabama. The contractors are scrambling to provide restrooms for the clean-up crews and anticipating future calls for units to be placed at construction sites during efforts to rebuild entire small towns that were wiped out.
As I talked to these PROs about the devastation they’ve witnessed and the way these sudden storms killed hundreds of people, it reminded me of the importance of early warnings in areas where tornadoes are an annual threat to safety. Since interviewing the PROs, I’ve been shopping for a desktop emergency weather radio for my home and another to carry with me when I travel on weekend camping trips. You may want to do the same to protect your family and employees.
While Web surfing for the latest weather radios, I found mobile units for as little as about $25 that could go out with your drivers on their daily routes, and feature-filled desktop models you could keep in your office and home for about $50. One tip is to look for a model that features the latest SAME technology, which allows you to pinpoint warning messages for your county and surrounding counties. This new technology helps you focus in on receiving the warnings that are most critical for the area where you live, work or run restroom cleaning routes.
What do you think about weather radios? Is there a particular model you think works well, either at a home base or while on the daily route? Your input might help save a life.
