It looks like holiday cheer is making its way through the septic world.

Last month we showed you how David and Andrea Knight, owners of Knight Environmental Services, kicked off the holiday season last year by decorating their House of Imports vacuum truck for the town’s Christmas parade in “Deck the Haulers for the Holidays.”

Dervin Witmer, owner of Pump That Septic, a subsidiary of Dig-It Excavating, in Cassopolis, Mich., took a crack at trimming his vacuum truck for this year’s holiday parade in Dowagiac, Mich.

“We decided to decorate our truck for the first time this season,” says Witmer. “We had a lot of great compliments and had a lot of fun as well.”

The 2002 International 7400 service truck built out by Imperial Industries, Inc., includes a 3,200-gallon steel tank and a NVE (National Vacuum Equipment) Challenger pump.

The whole family was involved in decorating the truck, and they were spotted before they even made it to the parade. “We pulled all three vehicles outside with all the lights on and a random guy pulled up to the shop and asked if he could take a picture because he thought it looked so cool,” says Witmer.

There were 125 floats in the parade, but no other vacuum trucks to compete with, says Witmer. “The crowd seemed to enjoy it.”

“We used an inverter and a sound system and my sons sang carols in the back of the service truck just ahead of the pumper,” he says. “Having the kids involved was a real hit.”

Witmer and his family were thrilled to participate in the parade. “It was fun to watch people pull out their cellphones and cameras as we went by,” he says. “We are only disappointed we can’t leave them on the trucks for the whole month.”
