Use Professionalism to Entice Good Workers

Atlanta-based Blu Site Solutions is larger than many portable restroom companies around the country, but that doesn’t mean it’s immune from the same problems and issues that vex smaller operations, such as attracting quality employees.

“We all face the same basic problems, but because of our size, the problems occur on a bigger scale,” says Jeremy Hawkins, a minority owner of the company along with Germany-based ADCO Holding GmbH, a global portable restroom rental and service operation. “And the hardest thing for us is finding good people. We’re continually looking for good employees and even have recruiters looking for us.” 

A shrinking labor pool — the result of an improving economy — intensifies the challenge. Hawkins says he sees potential candidates taking “more glamorous” jobs with companies like UPS and pest-eradication businesses instead of signing on to clean restrooms. “But we’re working to improve the level of professionalism so the difference isn’t as stark as it’s been in the past.” 

What does professionalism entail at Blu Site Solutions? Employees wear uniforms, safety vests and hard hats. Trucks are bannered with vinyl wraps. Drivers earn certifications through the Portable Sanitation Association International. “We take certifications seriously and make sure we keep up with them,” Hawkins says. 

The company also pays drivers competitive wages and awards them small weekly cash bonuses — up to $100 — for meeting goals such as accident-free driving, wearing their uniforms, no service recalls and submitting paperwork correctly. Blu Site Solutions also offers health and dental insurance and pays half of the insurance premiums.  

“I feel like we treat our guys very well,” Hawkins says. “I firmly believe that if you treat every person the way that you’d want to be treated, it all will come back to you.” 

Hawkins says a focus on hiring military veterans is also paying dividends. He says that the discipline required in the military generally yields hard workers that possess good ethics and are very dependable. “Besides that, it’s our patriotic duty. Soldiers should be able to find jobs after defending our country.”
