This is an exciting time for a new editor of a publication that showcases PROs, and I’d imagine it’s a pleasant time for you all as well.

This time of year often allows an opportunity for PROs to catch their breath a little. In the northern states, construction almost comes to a halt and special events slow down, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t busy catching up on things that may have taken a back seat to a jam-packed service route.

’Tis the season

Even if this season does mean less restrooms to deliver and service, I know good businesses understand how to stay busy and use the time wisely. You’re likely filling the days evaluating inventory, repairing damaged portables that were pushed to the back of the yard during the busy season, organizing and cleaning, and whatever else you can to prepare for spring.

I also hope this time of year creates opportunities for you to get away from the office and enjoy some time off. I have a lot to learn about this industry, but one thing I know and a piece of advice I will offer is to take time for yourself and give time to your employees. I know that’s easier said than done. It’s hard to walk away from a to-do list and not dwell on the fact that things aren’t being crossed off, but it’s something everyone needs to do once in a while. Plan a trip with family or friends and leave the work computer at home. Give yourself a much-needed mental and physical rest.

Providing your employees the opportunity to do the same is one of the best rewards you can give them for the months of dedicated time they contributed during the busy season. This offer goes a long way to boost morale and shows team members they are valued and appreciated.

Let me hear it

For me, I’m looking ahead at a new calendar year of issues and crossing my fingers that my phone rings more often during the winter months, with calls from you. One of the most enjoyable parts of this job is getting the chance to talk to dozens of hardworking people over the course of the year in hopes of rounding up enough interviews to fill each month’s columns. It can also be one of the most difficult parts.

I fully understand how busy you are and how hard you work to keep your businesses flourishing. Time is money as they say, so the bit you set aside to work with us for an article is truly appreciated.

As someone fairly recent to the industry, I really do hope readers reach out. I want to hear what you think about current industry issues, trends good or bad, topics that aren’t talked about but should be, or whatever else you think relevant. I am all ears and eager to learn.

With the WWETT Show right around the corner and my plane ride to Indy booked, I’d love to hear from veterans of the show on the best way to take advantage of my time there. What are things you’ve learned over the years that can help someone have the best experience? Are there certain speakers and education sessions on your radar this year as must-attend events?

A place for everyone

Whether you’re an industry veteran and already a frequent contributor to PRO, or someone rolling out portables for the first time, I value your opinion and can use it to learn. From those who have been doing this for a while, I welcome sound advice from experiences you’ve had, and from newcomers, please let me know what you need to learn and what challenges you are facing.

PRO regularly features professionals in all stages of their business. Our PROfile highlights those who have made a name for themselves as reliable and successful operators and the On Location column is built for specifics, detailing how companies handle large events or jobs. For people taking a leap of faith and entering the industry as a new owner, the Business Incubator column is there to tell your story. Please contact me and let’s find a place for you in the magazine.

Happy New Year to everyone! I look forward to hearing from you in the upcoming months and hope you enjoy the issue.
