The owners of Pennsylvania’s D&S Portable Toilets enjoy work on charity home makeover projects

Build Goodwill for Your Portable Restroom Business

In 2010 the ABC-TV series Extreme Makeover: Home Edition did a project in Hamburg, Pennsylvania, with the assistance of the local Home Builders Association of Berks County. When the TV crew left, the association was inspired to do something similar on an ongoing basis for people in their community who could use some help. They set up the HBA Restoring Hope Foundation, which operates under the philosophy “a hand up not a handout.”

Dennis and Sara Kline joined the group in 2010 as a way to market their new business, D&S Portable Toilets, in Hamburg, but a few years later, they also were excited to be part of the Restoring Hope Foundation as a way to give back to the community. Dennis Kline is now on its board of directors.

“We do it on a smaller scale than Extreme Makeover,” Dennis Kline explains. “We don’t tear down a whole house and start over. We’ll pick a family and restore their home. We look for the needy family, not the needy house.” The board holds monthly meetings to organize the whole thing. They do one project a year, and families submit applications for consideration. The board goes through the applications and visits families to see what they need. It has to be something that can be done in a week, so they find a suitable match and select the family. Projects might involve anything from remodeling a bathroom, making the home handicap-accessible, building a garage or an addition.

Hundreds of volunteers take part — community members, as well as all the trades. Most materials are donated, but the association also holds a few fundraising events — such as the April 2018 Cup-Cake Wars — throughout the year to fund materials that may need to be purchased.

Kline says they volunteer every year for the build. It’s not only beneficial for the recipients, but it’s fun, there’s a lot of camaraderie, and it’s satisfying to help a family in need.
