Robert “Bob” Alexander Williams of Wilmington, North Carolina, founder of Walex Products Co., passed away Friday, Nov. 18, 2022. He was 92.
Born in Washington, Pennsylvania, in 1930, Williams enrolled at Washington and Jefferson College at the age of 16 and later attended Penn State for graduate studies in physics. After college he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving as a lieutenant for the Bureau of Ordnance and later aboard the USS Tweedy (DE-532). After the Navy, he held technical and research positions at Monsanto Chemical and Burlington Industries.
Williams retired from Burlington, and in 1987 he began Walex Products with his son, Bill. Working out of his wife Barbara’s kitchen, Williams developed products while his son handled sales. Initial manufacturing occurred in Williams’ garage. Today Walex manufactures sustainable sanitation and odor-control products for the global market.
According to his official obituary, “Bob drove to the office every day until the age of 88 and was always the first one there to turn on the lights. His amazing friends at Walex are his extended family, and he genuinely loved and cared for everyone there. He especially enjoyed going to lunch with the guys and having a few good laughs over a glass of wine.”
Williams is survived by his wife of 62 years, Barbara, son Bill (Kendall) Williams, daughter Beth (Howard) Penton, and four granddaughters.
