When Chad and Melissa Hasz bought a portable restroom business in Bangor, Wisconsin, from the previous owners, it came with more than just the equipment, service trucks, a customer list and three employees. It also came with a well-known and respected name.
A company name has value — assuming there’s a good reputation and history behind it — and is considered an asset of a business. It has created an image in the mind of the public and gives a sense of legitimacy, longevity and continuity.
For Chad and Melissa, the value of the name goes beyond the legal and financial implications. The words themselves — Best Kept Portables — imply an operating philosophy that the Haszs took to heart. It succinctly describes how they want to conduct operations. It’s a standard to live up to and permeates all aspects of the business.
“It starts with the phone call,” Melissa says. “Then it’s everything we do on the job site, it’s providing clean units, it’s keeping people and trucks looking nice and presentable, it’s customer service.”
That philosophy may be intuitive to the owners, but what about the staff? It does take effort and frequent reminders, but Chad and Melissa also work to instill that attitude in their employees.
“One thing we try to do with the guys is get them to live up to the name Best Kept when they’re providing anything from a toilet to customer service,” Chad says.
Melissa adds that they regularly remind employees they’re representing the business. This applies even if they’re not technically on the job, especially if they’re wearing company clothing. “We tell them, when you’re out wearing your work shirts after work, be mindful of what you’re doing,” she says. “If you’re at a restaurant, make sure you’re treating the waitress really nice because you’re representing our business.”
Chad and Melissa believe strongly in their mission — and the name says it all.
