Fall: The air is crisp, the leaves are turning and suddenly every football team, pumpkin patch and harvest festival wants a fleet of portable restrooms delivered asap. For PROs, autumn is a high-stakes game of crowd control with a side of frost. Between crowd spikes and fickle fall weather, keeping things clean and running smoothly takes serious strategy. Here are five tips to keep your cool and your equipment intact this fall season.
1. Park Like a PRO
Setting up a site is like playing a high-stakes game sorting game. You want units close to high-traffic areas — near concession stands, main entrances and bleachers — so guests aren't doing a frantic dash across the field. But don't box in your service techs. Make sure your service trucks have a clear, smooth pathway. And watch out for autumn weather traps. For example, placing a portable restroom on a low-lying patch of grass sounds fine until it turns into a swampy mud pit overnight. When in doubt, roll out ground pads or wooden skids to keep units sturdy and save your trucks from an embarrassing tow.
2. Think Quick-Strike When Restocking
If you've ever seen a crowd of sports parents rush the restrooms between games, you understand high-traffic usage. To keep up, equip on-site techs with utility carts loaded with extra toilet paper, hand sanitizer and spray cleaner. Multiroll dispensers can be your best friend here, as are locked on-site containers stocked with extra supplies. Utilize half-time lulls or schedule gaps for fast pit stops to restock and wipe down surfaces before the next wave hits.
3. Beat the Freeze
Cooling seasonal temps can wreak havoc on your handwashing stations. Cold fall nights can transform full holding tanks into solid ice blocks. To keep water flowing, mix eco-safe antifreeze or propylene glycol into nonpotable tanks. If a cold snap is on the way, drain freshwater sinks overnight or wheel them inside a heated space. Don’t forget to double-check your sanitizer gel. Switching to cold-weather formulas keeps the hand sanitizer pumping smoothly instead of turning into sad, frozen jelly.
4. Talk the Talk
Communicating with your customers up front saves you from headaches later. Do a quick walkthrough with event organizers before the event to verify placement and clear service pathways. Share your service routine so they know when to expect your team on site, and hand over a direct line to your emergency contact. When event directors know exactly what's happening, everyone stays happy and stress-free.
5. After-Event Logistics
When the crowd goes home, your work isn't done. Prompt pickup helps prevent equipment from being targeted for late-night mischief or unexpected weather damage. Once back at the yard, give everything a thorough pressure wash and deep sanitization before storage. If winter is knocking at the door and brings a business slowdown, take the time to winterize lines and pumps now so you don’t find broken fittings come spring. Finally, huddle with your team for a quick debrief, note what went smoothly, what ran low and how to make the next fall event even better.
