PSAI is proud to announce the successful completion and ANSI approval of two major standard revisions: ANSI/PSAI Z4.3-2025: Nonsewered Waste Disposal Systems at Places of Employment: Minimum Standards; and ANSI Z4.4-2025: Nonsewered Waste Disposal Systems for Public Use.

As an Accredited Standards Developer through the American National Standards Institute , PSAI leads the charge in establishing rigorous, up-to-date standards for best practices that safeguard health, dignity and environmental responsibility across the portable sanitation industry.

These two revised standards represent clearly differentiated guidance for employment-based and public-use scenarios. Both updates respond to industry growth, rising public expectations, and heightened awareness around hygiene and disease prevention following the COVID-19 pandemic.

ANSI Z4.3-2025: Standards for Places of Employment

The original Z4.3 standard has undergone a full modernization. The newly approved 2025 revision is exclusively focused on portable nonsewered waste disposal systems used at workplaces — from construction sites to remote job stations. The update reflects advanced servicing protocols and workplace-specific hygiene needs. Its goal is to guide employers, property owners, contractors and regulatory bodies in maintaining clean, functional and safe sanitation systems for employees.

ANSI Z4.4-2025: Standards for Public Use

In parallel, the updated ANSI Z4.4-2025 standard addresses portable sanitation in public environments, from parks and festivals to playgrounds and emergency response sites. The 2025 revision significantly expands the scope and clarity of the standard to reflect modern expectations for public health, accessibility and sustainability. It is aimed at event planners, local governments, emergency responders and anyone providing sanitation in spaces where sewered systems are unavailable.

“The approval of these two updated standards is a major achievement for our industry and our association,” says Veronica Crosier, executive director of PSAI. “They are the result of years of consensus-building, input from a diverse group of stakeholders and a strong commitment to protecting public health through quality sanitation practices.”

Raising the Bar

Together, ANSI Z4.3-2025 and Z4.4-2025 establish a clearer, stronger framework for sanitation in both occupational and public settings. By defining minimum requirements based on current materials, technologies and usage patterns, the standards help ensure that nonsewered systems are hygienic, safe and reliable — no matter where they are deployed.

Both standards were developed using ANSI’s canvass process, allowing all materially interested parties to participate in the review and approval process. The resulting consensus ensures that the standards are practical, applicable and aligned with real-world needs.
